Garden Club Event – Truffles – Secrets and Sources
November 12 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Food expert Peg Rahn started “Inner Gourmet” in 1974 with Sue Kranwinkle in their vintage Pasadena home kitchens. These were hands-on cooking classes followed by the meal that had been prepared together. This led to a cookbook, radio-KNX Food News, TV Regis Philbin, 15 Culinary tours to Europe and a Food/Travel writing career. In 2005, Peg directed a 10-year gig of FRESH cooking classes at the Arboretum. In retirement, she’s become and expert in eating! Truffles are one of her favorites and she’s not alone. Truffles have been covetted among discerning food lovers for centuries. Ancient Romans attributed therapeutic and aphrodisiac properties to the truffle, and though this remains unproven today, there is still a passion bordering on fervor for truffles.
During our program, Peg will take us to France (black Perigord truffle – Tuber melanosporum), Italy (white alba truffle – Tuber magnatum), the Oregon Truffle Festival and Blackberry Farms in the South Eastern US on our quest for knowledge about these earthy diamonds. You will especially love to learn about Blackberry Farms, the Relais & Chateau getaway resort situated on a pastoral 4200-acre estate in the Great Smoky Mountains where it’s possible to truffle hunt during the day and dine on truffle dishes at night.
The distinct aroma and intense earthy flavor of truffles transforms pasta, egg dishes, rice and even foie gras into exquisite experiences. The program will include contact for hunts, sources and recipes for your dining pleasure. In fact, why not have your own truffle dinner party with the posted recipe hand-outs!
There will be a drawing for the sumptuous “The Blackberry Farm Cookbook” (value $60).
This is a Zoom Event.
